Inconel 600 forgings is relatively unaffected by most neutral and alkaline salt solutions and is even used in some caustic environments. It resists steam and mixtures of steam, air, and carbon dioxide. This alloy is non-magnetic, provides excellent mechanical properties, and combines high strength with good workability, making it readily weldable. It demonstrates cold-forming characteristics typically associated with chromium-nickel stainless steels. It offers better resistance than nickel 200 and 201 under oxidizing conditions and provides good resistance to reducing conditions due to its high nickel content. It exhibits excellent resistance to high-purity water used in nuclear reactors and good resistance to scaling at elevated temperatures.

When working with Inco 600 forgings, it is well worth noting that its machinability is moderate, so sharp equipment is recommended. The alloy is weldable, with the gas tungsten arc welding technique being the most encouraged. As for heat treatment, 600 Inconel usually undergoes annealing and solution treatment. When forging, the temperature usually ranges from 2100 to 1900 ºF (1150 to 1040 ºC). However, cautious temperature management is critical at some stage in the forging procedure, considering that Inconel 600 may be susceptible to oxidation and cracks.
