Alloy SMO 254 Fasteners have good resistance to stress-related corrosion cracking Because they were cold-produced. At temperatures up to 120°C in testing, the ASTM A479 UNS S31254 Fasteners can also be utilized without having to be re-annealed. This alloy is challenging to machine because of its high rate of hardening and lack of sulfur. Although it is known that using powerful overpowered tools with positive feeds, sufficient lubrication, and modest speeds produces good machining results.

The temperature range of 982 – 1149°C (1800 – 2100°F) is suitable for hot working operations like forging, upsetting, and other operations. The alloy for SMO 254 can be annealed by heating it to a range between 1149 °C and 1204 °C after which the SMO DIN 1.4547 Fasteners need to be water quenched. The corrosion resistance of 254 SMO Bolts alloy can be improved by annealing. Although the fast rate of hardening makes it challenging to cold work the 254 SMO Fasteners, doing this leads to an improvement in strength and toughness. All conventional techniques can be used to cold work the alloy. Cold reduction is the only suitable technique for strengthening the alloy of UNS S31254 Hex Nuts because heat treatment has no impact on it.
